Think all medical devices are metal and plastic? Think again. Increasingly, life-saving tools are made of something else entirely: software. And we're going to talk about that in today's version of 2 Minutes on Tech, brought to you by Art and Logic.

SaMD, or Software as a Medical Device, refers to software that performs medical functions without being part of a physical device. That means diagnosis, monitoring, or treatment right from your phone, desktop, or the cloud. It's used in almost everything from cardiology to oncology, mental health, and even chronic disease management.

Software as a Medical Device makes healthcare more accessible, personalized, and real-time. It can catch early signs of stroke, monitor glucose levels, or help manage depression with zero hospital visits required. It also supports clinicians with decision support tools and AI-driven diagnostics.

It can be very challenging to develop, though. Because it's classified as a medical device, SaMD must meet strict regulatory standards from the FDA in the US or the EU MDR. That means privacy, security, accuracy, and reliability aren't optional—they're essential.

So what's the future hold for Software as a Medical Device? Well, AI-driven diagnostics, continuous patient monitoring, and even software that learns and improves over time. Software as a Medical Device is reshaping medicine, turning everyday devices into powerful clinical tools, and that's important work that should be continued.
